Wine-country wedding

The last couple weeks have been really busy, but I finally made time today to download the photos on my camera - the bulk of which were from Abby and Scott's wedding over Labor Day weekend. In spite of my tagline, this is one time that I don't have any humorous stories to share with you - the wedding was nothing but romantic and fun.

Photo_017The ceremony and reception were both at the Elk Cove vineyard in Gaston, OR, about 45 minutes west of Portland. The ceremony was lovely, set beneath a gazebo overlooking rolling hills of grape vines.

Photo_026Afterward, we spent the evening enjoying the vineyard's wines and dancing the night away. Here's a shot of our Monday-night girls night group, Photo_039and another of Abby surrounded by "the girls" dancing to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

Thankfully after all that drinking, Abby and Scott had arranged for Photo_045shuttles to take us back to the McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, a 1922 Masonic & Eastern Star home that was converted in 2000 to a hotel with several restaurants and pubs. (Part of the same family as the Edgefield, where I saw Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett this summer.)

Right now the Grand Lodge is one of few hotels in the Oregon wine country, but if some developers have their way, soon there will be a luxury hotel in Yamhill county. Although at $500-$1000 per night, I'm not likely to be staying there anytime soon!

Finishing up the summer concert season

Last night I took my Mom to see Bonnie Rait and Keb Mo at Edgefield in Troutdale, OR, as an early/belated birthday present (early in that I bought the tickets in June, belated in that her birthday was in July). The concert was fantastic, and I love that Edgefield starts its concerts at 6:30pm, so you can actually get home at a decent hour on weeknights.

Here's a video taken on my cell phone of Bonnie and Keb performing "Angel From Montgomery" - one of my all-time favorite songs. The video and sound quality is admittedly poor, but I'm still proud to have posted my first-ever YouTube video. :-)

Future of air travel, as of 1975

FutureoftravelI don't know where the people at BoingBoing find the things they do, but their latest discovery is a 1975 video from the Institute for the Future depicting the future of supersonic air travel, complete with video phones, jetpacks, myriad personal robots and plenty of egg-shaped chairs. Link to the video on YouTube.

According to the video, "There's no waiting in this supersonic age, and very little walking." I wonder if robots do your workouts for you too?

Demolition, Hong Kong-style

16bldgsdemoedhk_1This cool YouTube video shows the simultaneous demolition of sixteen high-rise buildings in Hong Kong. Now that's something I never saw during my time there.
